I finished it this morning and agree. The story was gripping to the end. Although this has been a 'stand alone', I hope that this is not the last we will hear of Karen Pirie and colleagues.

I just started reading this book and must say that I am thoroughly engrossed. I too, like Robert, hope this is just the first in a series of books featuring Karen.

If it is a series, remember it would really be the second, not the first. A DISTANT ECHO came first. But I'm not convinced that it is a series in the conventional sense.

I've just read it, couldnt put it down. Got it from local library and found out there are 25 people waiting for it I pity the 25th!but if the next 24 read it as quickly as I did they wont wait too long!
It has struck a cord here in Fife and with myself as a Fife miner's daughter and I recognised so much of the emotions of the period if not the places as I'm from West Fife...indeed my home village Kelty is mentioned in the book, how cool is that! Great read! great drama yet again!

I'm a huge Val McDermid fan and this is one of her best! I loved the book and am now a big fan of Karen Pirie. I too hope we hear from her again.
