Subject: Author writes of a sadistic killer & his minion. Is this familiar to anyone? I am still looking >

for this book title. I am so certain it was by Ms. McDermid. The author had witnessed his sister's horrible murder when he was only a child. Then, as an adult, he writes of a sadistic killer who has a helper (a minion), but he has always thought of himself as the minion is his sister's death.
