FANTASTIC from beginning to end
Fever of the bone has been my favourite book so far, although I have not read them all in the right order, it was easy to follow the book. Fantastically written and has you guessing every step of the way. The different stories of the characters was interesting to read, where they were, what they were doing, the ending was a killer, leaving it at such a point, HURRY UP AND BRING THE NEXT ONE OUT! haha I love it and can't wait to back read the one's I missed. THANK YOU for the awesomly great books!

This could be the best one yet!
I've been watching and waiting for more about Dr. Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordan and here it is, a truly fascinating tale that had me ignoring food, sleep and the rest of my life. I am in awe of Val McDermid's ability to work up riveting plots, believable characters, unrelenting suspense and satisfying conclusions. The Wire in the Blood TV series turned me on to this outstanding author and I've now bought and read almost all her books (there are three I'm still looking for) and I can't wait for the next one. Live long and prosper, Ms McDermid, and please keep writing!

BEST NEW MYSTERY AUTHOR I'VE READ!
I had never read Val McDermid before until this book was recommmended by a mystery bookstore in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. I thought it had more twists and turns in the plot and wonderful characters delineated than any book I'd read in 10 years. She is my hero and I have read the Tony Hill series and some of her later books. I have a degree in English literature in the States and feel that she deserves to be read by even the pickiest mystery readers.

felt much more of a personal voice
Already familiar with Val McDermid books, I had read several, watched Tony Hill (Rob) in action on tv, and recently read a 'double' 2-in1 of Blue Genes and Clean Break. I was delighted by them both, great characters and fast-paced, but with a very different feel to later work. The language here and there was more 'northern' and the writing slightly less polished but in a way more real. I felt that I was hearing more of the 'writer's voice' in these two, which to me is a good thing! Like with music, I love to get those glimpses of something approaching the soul of the artist. It helps of course that I am familiar with the areas used in the book, Stockport and Manchester - I even did a short stint as an 80's music journalist, though not on the scale of KB's partner in the books. The reference to Manchester's flyposting wars triggered a few memories! Whilst I loved the storytelling, they made me more intrigued about the author too, checking the copyright dates and more eager to see the path that the writing has taken over the years. I will now be tracking down other books from this era and definitely keeping a fuller 'Val' section in my bookcase!

I was truly surprised a non-Tony Hill could keep me as engaged as this did!!
I have to say first and foremost I LOVE the Tony Hill books, dont like Val's other serial characters at all (Lindsay Gordon - awful), and so came to Grave Tattoo with an expectation that I wouldnt like it. How wrong can you be, I thought it was brilliant. Great new heroine that she could def use again, thought the swing between present day and Fletcher Christian's era was inspired. Totally different from Hill/Jordan, and if like me you thought it didnt get any better, please try this, you wont be disappointed!

good read-strong characters
Catches the bitterness of the miner's strike though I never saw that much poverty in South Yorkshire at the time.I like the Greek tragedy element, sins playing out down the generations in Brodie's family.Excellent location descriptions of Fife, the coast and Tuscany. As a male reader, it's good to see a well-written thriller with so many strong women characters. Will definitely read more of her tales.

Another one that kept me reading into the wee hours.
"Killing The Shadows" is the second of Val's books that I've read. "Place of Execution" is still my favorite, but I liked this one almost as much, and stayed up way past my bedtime to keep reading. I now have a long list of McDermid books on my request list at the library. Best book I've read in months!
"A Place of Execution" is the first of Val's books that I've read, and I just finished it late last night. The anxiety of not knowing how it would end tried my patience to keep reading and not turn to the back of the book (something my ex-partner used to do routinely, which drove me crazy!) I resisted the temptation, and was rewarded beyond my expectations! I am currently recommending this book to every woman I know, and looking forward to reading more of Val's books.

all consuming... had 3 hour baths so that I could read in peace and at length!
as ever with her books it starts simply and slowly with the beautiful intro to her main characters. This book in particular, jumped seemlessly between decades, threw you back (if you're old enough to remember)to a time that was a woebegotten one in English history. The twists and turns and fearless approach to the characters added to the story's intrigue. And the final twist was a most wonderful "nail in the coffin". I first discovered Val's books in a 2nd hand shop in Toronto, Canada in 2004 and have pretty much read them all since. They never disappoint and are never predictable... such is the joy of reading this author's work...

The Wire In The Blood
     |
Chilling to the very last line of the epilogue.
Lesser writers seek to captivate their readers from the first paragraph. Val McDermid is a far superior writer than that.
This plot is woven with unusual intelligence that proves all the more satisfying as it's shape develops and finally unravels into a gripping an compelling finale.
There are well crafted interplays within this between DCI Carol Jordan, Dr Tony Hill, National Profiling Task Force, the Met and regional police squads and the psycholigical chess between Tony Hill and the chief suspect stands out. The frustration and lack of cooperarion between police and profilers gives a realistic glimpse of their work.
The age and fallibility of the victims seems particurly poignant in today's world where so many crave fame and success. It may be unrealistic to suppose that there can and should be satisfactory closure after murders and in it's way, this book makes that point. I believe that this is one of the finest books of it's genre by one the most gifted authors who has been at the pinnacle of her career for quite some time.
A first class read.

After two decades of reading crime fiction, I had grown suspicious of the cover blurb "will keep you up all night". a thoughtful read
I agree with the general tone of the reviews for A Place of Execution but the book would have benefited from some serious editing. It was overly long and with a tighter control it could effortlessly have been at least 100 pages shorter.
Its a splendid read though and it captures the period well .It has a strong narrative and the characters are well drawn although some are a little stale and paper thin and occasionally sterotypical- gritty policeman, witch-like rural old ladies and hated newcomers-which spoils the overall effect and atmosphere.
The plot was a little predictable and the ending was rather a disappointment and far too drawn out but the writer was clearly heavily engaged with the characters and seemed reluctant to let them go.
I enjoyed the book but it was simply far too long and often repetitive.

I kept trying to outguess the team but failed
A really good yarn. having watched the series "Wire in the blood" I kept imagining Robson Green's voice in the script. Two questions for Val please. How did Rachel have the knowledge to presumably add or select "the third component (of the bomb) taped between the ignition and the timer?" .Yousef assembled the bomb but didn't have full knowledge of it's components. Also, could Val please refer Tony to a Psychoanalyst so he could sort out his emotions in order to have a long-term romantic and sexual relationship with Carol? Finally, thanks for the story Val, I will definitely be buying more in the series featuring Tony Hill.

Great Book, well written - until the ending!
I loved the first part of the book. Very well written, great charachters, wonderful description of the era and the atmosphere. But, the end blows it. Too huge a coincidence that George's son is marrying Allison's daughter. Too many unanswered questions. Hawkins would have confessed to the other child abuse to save his neck. If he brought that up, police would have looked more closey at the possibility of the villagers setting him up. That said, I will definately read more of Val McDermids work.

fabulous - never read her before, but this is unputdownable - kind of remember the miners strike but too young to know its significance - her writing almost makes you feel ashamed that you weren't as aware as you should have been - very pacy, thought provoking and gripping. A big let down compared to all her other books. Normally I hate to have to put one of her books down but this one I found myself looking for an excuse to leave it. Totally gripping
If you can remember where you were when Kennedy was shot, where you were when John Lennon was shot, where it was you watched the 1966 World Cup Final, well, you are obviously above a certain age. But if you can remember where you were when you read "A Place Of Execution", that recollection of time and place has more to do with the atmosphere Val McDermid created in your mind then any effect external events may have had on you. I can remember the streetside Restaurant I took to every lunchtime in order to immerse myself in that world, redolent of small villages in Derbyshire and the Moors murders. This ia a superb book and although I have read just about everything Val has written since the Kate Brannigan books, this for me is the finest

Murder, mystery spiced with history.
Val McDermid is a mistress of her craft, just as Rankin is the master. The Grave Tattoo, a standalone in amongst the great Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series, takes us back through ages to the time of Wordsworth, the famous case of Mutiny on the Bounty and whether or not a body discovered buried in the hills could be that of Fletcher Christian. I could smell and taste the air in the Lakes, so vivid is the picture that Val creates. I was so lost in it all, the ending crept up on me. I was sad to finish!

I put off reading this for a while because of the subject of the Moors Murders, but in fact they're very minor here and so all was well. Beneath the Bleeding

A thoroughly enjoyable and brilliant psychological procedural
Val McDermind gets better every time and so do her characters. Beneath the Bleeding is fresh, contemporary, cinematic and deeply thought-provoking. It's a big story, and the climax is a superb masterpiece of psychology, tight plotting and impossibly good writing. I defy anyone not to like this book.
Tony Hill is far more expertly drawn in the hands of Val McDermid than of any TV director, and this book finally gives us some hints and revelations as to his past. The interplay between Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordon is sketched beautifully and deeply nuanced in subtext. For me, this is the best book of the series.
But it is both the plot and the prose combined that make this a must-read book. I could write that "I couldn't put it down", but that wouldn't be true. Sometimes I had to put it down to think about some of the concepts explored or clever phrases casually uttererd by one of the characters (on one or two occasions I admit to consulting a dictionary to get a word or context definition).
The plot twists come fast and slick and there is no let-up in the pace. The procedural elements, which concern rank and masculine officialdom are enlightening and entertaining and the prevailing sense of justice carries throughout, as always.
More than just a ripping good yarn, it's a riveting exploration into our deepest and darkest thoughts of envy and revenge. Spooky stuff.
Lots of wry smiles and raised eyebrows from the reader at intelligent comments on the way.

Complex, wonderful characters,
This book competes with A Place of Execution (also by McDermid), as one of the best written murder mysteries I have come across. Four St. Andrews students drunkenly stumble across the dying body of a bar waitress, just before Christmas 1978. From that moment on, their lives are disrupted and nearly destroyed as they become the prime suspects. The story follows the four friends, as they attempt to lead normal lives over the next 25 years. They are hounded by the dead girls brothers. The police choose to ignore their stories (which are not completely true). They are frustrated at the lack of progress in the investigation. As new investigative techniques are created, the young men keep hoping that they will be exonerated, but lost evidence hampers the solution to the heinous crime. A secret held by the dead girls family becomes exposed decades after the original murder, much to the chagrin of her brothers. The distrust and hatred that wells from the small community has the young men in despair and it changes them dramatically. The best and worst of their character comes out, and others become unwitting victims.
There are very few flaws in this novel, but even minor ones can impact the veracity of a well crafted story. In one instance, the murderer rents a car in California, but doesnt use a credit card. It is unlikely that one could rent a car in the United States without a credit card. Although the author might find a way around that issue, I dont think its a minor point. Part of the investigation involves a private detective, who might have uncovered some details that would have driven the story down a different road.
The only other problem, if it is a problem, is that Rosies murderer becomes rather obvious well before the end of the book. How her murderer will affect the actions and eventually the destruction of another is not so obvious.
The character development is marvelous, as Ziggy, Weird, Mondo, and Gilly, along with the detectives, and other associated characters, evolve into cunning, sympathetic, or pathetic figures.

Excellent whodunnit
This is not a review in the usual sense: a few comments though. First, the characters seemed a little two-dimensional. Secondly, it was really curious that the author did not mention Norfolk Island once despite that island's close connection with the Fletcher Christian saga- even at the end when River had searched for his descendants on Pitcairn (logical) and New Zealand (reasonable- but there are hundreds of descendants on nearby Norfolk island).
The interspecion of Christian's and Wordsworth's narratives at the start of each chapter was a nice touch.

Worth the time
I bought this book as soon as it was published as I am a really big fan of Val's.
It took me quite some time to get around reading it because I started the first few chapters a couple of times and lost interest.
I am glad I made the effort because this is a great story and shows the versatility of Val's work.
The historic angle was well researched and kept the readers interest, there was a couple of other story lines going along at the same time and though I did guess the outcome at the end one thing you can be sure of is Val McDermid does not resort to cliches.
A good all round read but I cannot wait until the next Tony Hill book comes out.

I never thought I would be spending time reading and borrowing books from the library every now and then. It all started when i found The Torment of Others at a book fair - where I intended to buy only comics.
Intrigued by the synopsis at the back of the book and wanted to know what exactly lies in the book with such an attractive tittle (at least to me), I bought it and never regretted buying it.
I borrowed The Wire in the Blood followed by The Torment of Others, not knowing i was borrowing them in the wrong chronological order. - They were, nonetheless, fabulous reads! The references to events that happened in the books before the one i was reading just makes me want to re-read them all again, and in chronological order. - Well, and when i get my hands on The Last Temptation.
The writing, storyline, plot are just brilliant! Though I've fallen in love with the characters, Carol and especially Tony, I would want to read all of the books by Val. I simply love her writing style and I'd want more of Tony Hill books. I just love getting into the minds of the criminals, and in Val's style.

Harrowingly mind blowing!
Found this book whilst on holiday and was sucked in immediately with the gripping yet horrendous detail that Val has written about. It kept me riveted to the last page and left me breathless and wanting more - even though it seems to be based around my locality, I was absolutely fascinated to the end! Excellent read, completely unputdownable! This was my first read of a Val McDermid book, but it definitely wont be my last. Would recommend this to anyone who can bear to read about the sickening mindset of novel criminals - er, it is just a novel - right?!

Predictable
In common with most of Val's readers, I conclude that Marie Marr, United Kingdom must be pig thick. "A Place of Execution" is predictable from the beginning and easy to see where the tale is going. No need to wade through the whole book, just read the last five pages.

an engrossing story.
A classic crime novel, that becomes more enthralling as the reader progresses through the shoreline. Both the central and peripheral characters are well defined and believable, which the reader will find difficult not to empathise with.

OK
Good story, spoilt by bad grammar - no number/noun agreement, ignorance of possessives, incorrect use of demonstrative articles are just a few of the many mistakes throughout. However like all his stories Val never strays far from the pong of lesbianism.

     |
Too long - and Val can do much better than this!
Basically this is a whodunit of 561 pages, and I spotted who did it within less than 20. Normally I'm not that good at guessing such things so this has to be a weak element to the story. It removed most of the suspense for me, because I had to read over 500 more pages knowing the ending. And I was never in any doubt.
A young girl is murdered back in 1978, and at the time the killer is not found although there are several key suspects, in particular the four students who discovered the body. Then we jump forwards to 2003 and the case is re-opened, with the occasional new twist here and there.
What spoilt things for me was the absence of a strong, key central character. Previously I read The Torment of Others by the same author which included two of her most popular heroes Carol Jordan and Tony Hill. I think novels are made or broken by the depth of their central characters, and it's disappointing in this case because I already knew that McDermid is more than capable of creating them. The Distant Echo is compromised by the absence of any truly interesting characters and by its excessive length. Having said that I have confidence in the writer, I have about six other novels of hers that I have yet to read and I am sure that I will have more positive things to say about most if not all of them. Val McDermid is one of Britain's leading literary ladies and I can only suggest that The Distant Echo is a mild blip and normal service will soon be resumed. It's not bad, but not as good as her Hill/Jordan or Brannigan series.

A Place of Execution
     |
Riveting, absorbing, entertaining and satisfying
Val McDermid has written some outstanding novels (The Torment of Others, Wire in the Blood and Mermaids Singing come to mind) but somehow, somehow this one probably tops the lot. It is utterly immaculate in its (forgive the pun) execution, in its structure, in its characterisation and in its capacity to surprise and even deceive the reader. I need not go over the summary of the story here as so many others have already done that, but can I just repeat the words of the Daily Telegraphs Gerald Kaufman, who stated that It may be that McDermid will write better novels than this in the future, but I do not see how. I concur with that view absolutely.
For those of you who remember seeing Hitchcocks Vertigo the first time, you will probably recall wanting to see the film all over again immediately, realising at the end that most of what had gone before was not as you had assumed. So it follows that in A Place of Execution, despite admirably detailed accounts of the investigations into the case of a missing teenage girl back in 1963, which in effect come to a seemingly satisfying conclusion three-quarters of the way through the book, the final quarter which unravels itself 35 years later in 1998 manages to completely dismantle our earlier belief that justice had been done and made me want to read the 1960s part of this book again to see if I could have guessed what was coming. Of course, I already knew that there was going to be a twist to this tale and I took much pleasure in taking guesses as to what it would be; a miscarriage of justice was the most obvious, but that cannot be said to be true because for all human reasons other than legal, justice was clearly served even if there were some unexpectedly high prices to be paid, it later emerged, on the part of more than one victim.
This is storytelling at its best. The characters are so real that I feel that I want to contact them and talk about their experiences. I led myself to understand that A Place of Execution is based on a true story, in which case it only serves to underline that truth is invariably stranger and more convincing than fiction. There are some stories that just cannot be made up, and I reckon that this is one of them. Knowing the story was based on real-life events had left this novel on my library shelves at home for more than a year what a mistake that was, and I discovered this within a handful of pages. It has few flaws, it has been written by a masterful and confident writer at the top of her game and I recommend it without reservation.
If you havent read it yet, then do not hesitate : order your copy today. And while youre at it, buy at least a half-dozen more Val McDermid novels, because in the world of suspense, mystery and crime writing she really has very few peers.

High Five
It's always a pleasure when I take a chance on a new novelist and it pays off as well as it did here. Val McDermid is, I now know, one of our best writers and I won't hesitate to buy any book in the future with her name on the cover. In The Torment of Others, you'll get everything you want from a thriller and more : intelligent characters, gripping imagery, a powerful plot, clever pacing and just entertainment all round. The lead characters Jordan and Hill are very much individuals whose personalities and concerns are so well described that we almost feel that we know them; the key point is that we can easily believe in them. The side-plot of their 'relationship' is actually intriguing, dealt with subtle aplomb by their creator and cleverly left unfinished within the context of this story so that we can carry on where they left off in the next one. The main story line of this book is quite daringly graphic in its description without being gory for its own sake. It just leaves you wondering "Jeez, what a way to go"...and I'm not a woman! This is a writer of high intellect, vivid imagination and the bringing together of those rare skills makes for very enjoyable reading. Call me a fan.

The Wire In The Blood
     |
Outstanding
Val McDermid is one of the very best thriller writers of our time, and although I have only just finished reading this 1997 novel, it must rank as representative of VM at the peak of her abilities. Wire in the Blood is really hard to fault, and its one of the very few books that I have read that isnt something to do just to pass the time - no, its worthy of top choice on any list of means of entertainment. Cancel all appointments and read this first, its amazing value!
Val is confident enough to name the killer on the first page yet develop and sustain tension for the reader until the very last one. Furthermore she has the ability to create and develop several characters that the reader can truly believe in, and build up a sense of strong like or dislike for more than one. The bad guy is one Jacko Vance, our feelings of hatred for him perhaps cleverly manipulated by the author by way of his iconic status as an adored public hero within the context of the story. The question is how will he be stopped? Fortunately his adversaries are the Hill-Jordan team, which might sound a little Formula One for anybody new to this series but in fact Home Office profiler/psychologist Dr Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordan are in every sense a well-matched pairing, each with their own wardrobe skeletons and worthy of keen reader attention be they working alone or together. Its perhaps worth mentioning that Tony Hill is possibly the only male character in this story who comes out with any sense of respect or integrity, outnumbered as he is by several shining female roles. Even then, his potential status as Leading Man is undermined by his apparent impotence and subsequent inability to consummate the relationship that exists between he and Carol Jordan, who we assume has no such incapacities. There are more than a few lesbian references or characters which does call to question the accordant leanings of the writer, which I occasionally found distracting, but thats nitpicking in truth this is a taut, well-paced thriller that makes for a great introduction to anyone new to Val McDermid.
I own all four of the Hill-Jordan novels but unfortunately I have read them in the wrong chronological order.just my luck to begin with the most recent (The Torment of Others), with its references to events in Berlin that I was yet to discover in the third in the series (The Last Temptation). Thats what Im reading right now immediately after finishing Wire in the Blood, and its every bit as good as the others. Val McDermid is without doubt one of my favourite writers of crime thrillers and I recommend her work unreservedly.

BRILLIANT
I'd seen "Wire in the Blood" on the television and thought it was pretty damn good so when I went to the book shop and found this book I immediately went home and sat down to read it, I didn't get up from that position for seven hours whilst my eyes flicked across the pages as fast as possible, needless to say dinner got burnt, the cat wasn't let out, the dog didn't go for a walk but I got one heck of a good read. The writing itself was brilliant, the storyline was great, twists came out of nowhere and left me reeling but most of all the two protagonists were realistic and compelling and real to life. Top notch, I look forward to the next Carol Jordan/Tony Hill book.

a sad move away from positive images of women
Having just heard about Val's being on a very short list of highly influential voices in publishing, it is a sad turn of events that her characters increasingly reflect stereotypical and male-biased views of women. Where Lindsay Gordon and Kate Brannigan integrate images of lesbian characters into their immediate surroundings in a positive way, in The Torment of Others, the reader is not only offered images of a lesbian police officer being tortured and who is the 'bad guy' committing such atrocities, another lesbian character. Not only is this plot line hardly believable, but it also panders to male fantasies about lesbian women and reinforces suspicion and marginalisation of them as a group. Val apparently commented on her being in such a powerful position by saying she had to be careflu how she uses her power. I would say that avoiding conforming to male dominated perspectives in her novels might be food for thought. The change in her writing over the years exhibits and ever increasing conformity to what the masses want than the innovative and radical visions of women's lives which, it seems to me, made her so popular to begin with. What price power?

Best book I have ever read!
I have been watching the Wire in the blood-series on telly for as long as they have shown them here in Finland. And I think it is a brilliant serial. A few weeks ago I accidentally came across a book about Tony Hill and Carol Jordan and I decided to read it.
After only a few pages I was hooked. I read and read and finished the book in a matter of days. It was thrilling and scary, but in some places it had a great deal of warmth in it too. It was the best book I have ever read! I will definately read the rest of the McDermid-books as soon as I can lay my hands on them.
I recommend The last temptation warmly! If you find it, please read it, I promise you will not regret it!

damage
I have read the wire in the blood,I have read hundreds like it in terms of story, although it is well written, but my point is,how does a writer any writer of this type of fiction, deal with the things they are writing about, the torture and murder, of young women,in quite realistic detail to a more or less degree, while in reality it does happen frequently, right now somewhere a nightmare is actually happening in much the same way to a woman, so a writer doesnt have to make much up,but they are writing it for money and entertainment,I know one could apply this to almost anything and one might say, nothing would ever get written or filmed if this rule applied, but upon reading this book,it just struck me about our values, and particularly the values of a writer who deals in this stuff, something about responsibility to oneself and other people, wheres the payment for it,or who pays, and in what way and how,its not just stories, because it happens all the time to particularly women and children, are they the ones who pay inevitably with often their lives? So that writers can write, films can be made? We can be entertained? Is there a link somehow, one can say it would happen anyway without books and films.Yes thats true of course, but is it right or good to offer it up like this, even as fiction, when we know its not.

On my "keep till I die" book shelf
I've always admired Val McDermid's writing, but have to admit that until I began watching the "Wire in the Blood" series on BBC Cable here in America, I did not really become a dyed-in-the-wool fan. I've re-read the Tony Hill series that I had read previously and enjoyed so as to be caught up in "The Torment of Others' in a proper frame of mind. This book is like marvelous icing on a very tasty cake. All the other Tony Hill books were excellent appetizers for this latest story. Val McDermid has become my favorite writer now that Colin Dexter has taken Inspector Morse to his final resting place.

I've found my new favourite author and not just because she's a Scot
Move over Harlan Coben, Jeffrey Deaver, Jonathan Kellerman, James Patterson and Robert Crais. I've just discovered Val McDermid and she's my new favourite crime writer. While I had the ending figured out about two-third of the way through The Distant Echo, it remained an engrossing, couldn't-put-it-down thriller to the last page. Totally Brilliant!!!
Every Val McDermid book I've read has been un-put-downable. I'd thought `A Place Of Excecution' was her best book.......but I was wrong. I don't know how it was possible to top A Place Of Exec., but I'm only 50 or so pages from the end of `The Last Temptation', and not happy about coming to the end of it. I started it just over 24 hours ago, and have tried to make it last longer - like a kid with a new Xmas gift!! As with all the Tony Hill & Carol Jordan books, this one takes the reader on a surreal and terrifying journey into the dark side of human nature. I love the development of intimacy between Hill & Jordan, almost as an antidote to the references to the horrors of (legalised) abuse in history being carried down through the generations. And I loved the brief reference to civilisation being only a very thin veneer. This appears to be a recurring theme in all McDermid's books. I find all of her books provide a wonderful - if only brief - escape from the dull grind of everyday life.

I have been a fan of Val McDermid's writing for many years. After I read the last Tony Hill and Carol Jordan novel I thought that it was sadly the last for them especially after what Carol suffered through. I was absolutely delighted to find another installment!! After watching the TV series (I had already read the books but still enjoyed the show) I found Robson Green and Hermione Norris the perfect actors to play Tony and Carol. So often when books are made for TV, the result is disappointing - congrats to all involved. The only problem with finishing "The Torment of Others" is I am left panting for more and feeling much affection for Tony and Carol. Despite what others say I don't believe they have to have sex to "complete" their relationship - it's obvious they love each other deeply!

Completely bewildering, very original
I loved this book, hard to read towards the end due to the content but a heartfelt and captivating story. I didn't guess what was coming, for a chnage, and there were no cliches or things you felt you'd heard before. It was chilling and really left an impression on me for a long time.

Brilliant read!
I've only recently started reading Val McDermid books and this last one was a masterpiece. Brilliantly written, totally believable and in places stomach churning, glad I have a strong stomach. I found it hard to put down and the characters were wonderfully human and the storyline chilling, but nevertheless fantastic!! When's the next one due out?

Excellent reading!!
I recently found Val McDermid's books and have since read a few of them and can't wait for the next one! Brilliant!! The plot is so believable and you find yourself embroiled in it so much that you can't put the book down. Val McDermid manages to keep your interest to the end and yes, you do need a strong stomach but the storyline is great and the characters so human that you find yourself living the story with them, I know I did. When's the next one due out?

My best holiday read this summer
I was so pleased to read this after making myself finish the awfully tedious "Da Vinci Code" that everyone was raving about. Val Mcdermid is a master storyteller and I have read nearly everything she has written and I was a fan long before Robson Green popularised her books on TV.This book was particularly gripping as it reflected 30+ years in the lives of a group of friends who had found a dead body whilst students at St Andrews Uni. Excellent.

My favorite Tony and Carol Book
Out of the three Tony and Carol books I've read, this one is definitely my favorite. It helps to have read the prior two to be able to keep up with character development, although it's not absolutely necessary. One of the murderers has a original motive, one that's guarenteed to get the reader to think past the novel and about history and the future of humanity. Excellent book!

Just Brilliant
After watching the fantastic TV series "Wire in the Blood" starring the wonderful Robson Green and Hermione Norris I read the Mermaids Singing and The Wire in the Blood, but this book has to be the best so far!
It literally keeps you hooked and I was just dying to read more of it...usually it takes me weeks or even months to read a book, but I read this book in 2 days flat!
Now I can't wait to get hold of The Torment of Others :)
Roll on series 3 of Wire in the Blood on tv as well - I can't wait!

completely absorbing
Another really enjoyable(?) novel from Val McDermid. I am in awe of her ability to write so concisely about such awful crimes and also in the cleverness of the plot. How does she manage to cram so much detail about police investigations and the work of psychologists in such a way as to make it so interesting and absorbing? An absolutely cracking read that I have hardly put down since the first page. It has interfered with housework, paid work, sleep and TV viewing over the past few days. It was so worth it.

This is the first book of Val's that I have read and I shall definitely be reading more. She writes excellently enabling the reader to be an active part in the lives and emotions of the characters. The tale twists and turns but never really giving you a clue as to the identity of the killer until the very end. You will not be able to put it down.

How does she do it?
I'm thirteen and stopped reading kids books 2 1/2 years ago. Someone at school picked up the last temptation and said: "my mum said it was good - you might like it!" I took it as a joke but read it anyway. I was immediately hooked on Tony Hill and Carol Jordon and rejoiced when the last book came out. I have to admit it wasn't quite as good as the previous two, but it was still tons better than any other book I've read before. I think if you've read the series you'll really enjoy (okay - possibly not the right word) this book, but you need to have read the rest. Once I made the mistake of lending wire in the Blood to my mother, but regreting it the second she read the first page. I then found her three weeks later reading it at night! Now she's as hooked as me but has a full time job so hasn't read the rest yet... I am still in utter awe of somebody who can create such believable, complex characters and plots - another stunning novel, well done! P.S. If you havent read it yet, you MUST!

Superb
I bought the Torment of Others a few weeks ago and had been waiting with anticipation to start it.
I read the whole book in two days (I just forgot the children, the ironing etc).
It was a really easy read, the plot flowed at a perfect pace with plenty of time for character development. I even didn't who it was until 3/4 way through the book which was amazing.
I really enjoyed the way two stories were wove into the book with each being as interesting as the other.
The only thing that stopped it getting 5 stars was the fact I am getting a little bored with the sections of the book about the killers thoughts typed in italic.
They are essential to the plot I know, but so many authors do this now and its these sections I tend to skip if I am getting bored with a book.
Roll on the next Tony & Carol book.

It was brilliant, absolutely superb
I have to say, without a doubt, that The Distant Echo is definitely McDermid's best book....I couldn't stop reading!! It was such a complex storyline but it was amazing. I love psychological thrillers and McDermid is definitely my favourite author. The book only had one flaw.....Ziggy died. I was quite upset when this happened as he was my favourite character. I managed to spot he was gay before McDermid revealed his secret!! ;) I thought this was an interesting plot twist as it created ideas in the reader's head. Overall a fantastic reader, I sincerely recommend it to anyone!

Disappointed with the conventional story line
McDermid has never recovered from the Place of Execution which in my mind is the best book she has written and a classic of the genre. In contrast. Torment of Others is predictable and overdoes the 'girls do it better'idea. The lesbian direction of the novel with strong, independent and dominating women characters and weak, confused and devious men interfered with the creation of a suspenseful atmosphere and believeable narrative flow. Also, when will someone write a crime thriller where there isn't a boring, accountant-minded and insecure senior officer breathing down everyone's necks.

A Two Day Read
I couldn't read it over night. I have a 2 year old grandniece who thinks I'm her favorite 2 year old friend. We will be 3 in December. But I would have if I had free time.
I found "The Torment of Others" quite good. It was an easy read and made lots of sense. It made sense to me that Carol would fine someone to help her through the first steps back to sexual confidence. The story itself kept me guessing. I agreed about Tyler, but couldn't place who might have manipulated him. Tony's boss was my first suspect in the prostitute killings. When Honey ran after seeing Jan, then I started to suspect that the Creeper might be a cop. But Jan was too personable. It wasn't until the discussion at the kitchen table that I realized who it was. Jonathan was my first suspect in the killings of Tim and Guy. Maybe it was prejudice. He fit the profile completely and he showed up in her life and was very helpful just at the right time. And well, it always breaks my heart when Val writes that Tony berates himself as a worthless man. But he's got the answer now. Words without actions are useless.
All in all, definitely recommended. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. My fav is still "The Last Temptation" and I seriously hope everything comes through if Val and Robson get funding to do the film.

This book was honestly the best book I have ever read. I couldn't put it down. I had expected to read it little by little over the weekend but I was so absorbed in it after reading just the first few paragraphs that I just kept on reading for hours until I finished it. Val is an amazing author. Bravo! So well-written and such a good plot. And the morals it teaches about friendship and other things that are woven into it. Such a great book. I chose it randomly out of all the mystery/suspense books at the library and I am beyond the highest state of bliss that I chose it. I highly recommend it. It is the first of Val McDermid's books that I have read. I can hardly wait to read more of them!

I read this book during an ice storm and let me tell you, it was so gripping that I didn't care we had no power or heat. I transported to St. Andrews all the way. Another facet of the book that made me come back for more, to the book and to Val McDermid, was I could put it down to do my school work, but when I picked it up again I was totally absorbed. I happened on the "Wire in the Blood" series with Robson Green and Hermione Norris and really liked it. I thought I'd check out the books. Books are never the same as the program, but I discovered that I like both for different reasons. Now as I read the first pages of the book, I can't wait for more. I haven't read another author since
I've never read 'crime fiction' before but as an exiled Mancunian, reading the cover notes on Blue Genes, I thought "Well why not?" Within the first few pages I felt like I'd been taken home. I find the Kate B. novels exciting yet comfortable, like chatting with an old friend due to the familarity of the settings but excitement is added by then having surprises thrust upon you by the ability of the author to throw in twists that could not be predicted. Snipets of unexpected, laugh-out-loud humour only added to my enjoyment of my first Val McDermid read. I finished Blue Genes in a few days and have now read all of the 'Kate' books and three Tony Hill novels in succession. My favorite author has always been Douglas Coupland, contempary American fiction focusing on the disenfranchisement of the post baby-boom generation (X). For an author to divert me away from my prefered genre and make me long for more of her output before I've even finished the book I'm reading is testament and high praise indeed.

Always sceptical about a new author I can honestly say I am now hooked and will be methodically working my way through Val's backlist.
Killing the Shadows was excellent...the characters were very vivid and each chapter had me desperate to find out what was going to happen next. I read it in 5 days flat, infuriating my husband by concentrating on it when he wanted to talk about his day....addicted I'm afraid!

A very worthy addition to Val's bibliography
The synopsis on Val's website reads "Synopsis: Four in the morning, mid-December, and snow is smothering St Andrews. Student Alex Gilbey and his three best friends are staggering home from a party when they stumble upon the body of a young woman. Rosie Duff has been raped, stabbed and left for dead in the ancient Pictish cemetery. And the only suspects are the four young students stained with her blood. Twenty-five years later, Fife police mount a cold case review. Among the unsolved murders they're examining is that of Rosie Duff. But someone else has their own idea of how justice should be done. One of the original quartet dies in a suspicious house fire. Soon after, a second is killed in what looks like a burglary gone sour. But Alex fears the worst. Someone is taking revenge for Rosie Duff. He has to find out who it is before he becomes the next victim. And it might just save his life if he can uncover who really killed Rosie all those years ago", which pretty much covers it in a nutshell
What it doesn't cover is the taut plotting, superb writing (although gritty and realistic, not there to shock, just to paint the characters vividly) and gut aching suspense that makes you sit and read well past your bedtime - I do so love a book that pulls me in to such a degree that nothing penetrates until I finish it. Sometimes even a natural lull in the action is not enough to make me put it down, I HAVE to find out what's going to happen, whodunnit and if justice will prevail. This was one of those times. For all that her standalone novels can be darker than those of her earlier series like Kate Brannigan and Lyndsay Gordon, Val's characters are real and three dimensional and you care about them whether it's to like or dislike. As the focal points of the novel, I thought the whole quartet were beautifully drawn but I particularly liked Ziggy and Alex. And one of my particular favourite types of endings: I didn't have a clue what was coming until it was happening. It just adds that extra twist of enjoyment.
This was as good as A Place of Execution, the last standalone I read, and if you haven't had a chance to read this one, do try it. Very highly recommended.

It is not off putting to have 2 threads going at once, and I loved it!
VM brings terror to life with this series, and the deep cover to catch an elusive smuggler of human flesh is powerful, as is the ending...no spoilers here, but what the police "might" do in the name of "justice" is chilling...

So gripping that it held on to me and wouldn't allow me to release myself !!
I consider myself a layman expert on forensic/psychological/murder mysteries and find that this book is definitely at the top of its genre. Absolutely enthralling and touches the very pulse of what can be at the root of many behaviors. I even discovered a deep rooted mystery of a behavior way back in my teenage years that now I understand. The ending shocked me. I looked past the pages of an excerpt of the next novel to see if there was more to the ending. I wanted to READ..not imagine the satisfaction of knowing how Vance suffered humiliation and volcanic anger of being caught. I had to laugh at myself for looking further into the pages to find more..like a child thinking there was someone for real in the mirror.

The plot is ok - it is a novel though, but I just cannot accept that one DCI, one serial-killer novelist (with a great imagination)and a kind of profiler all together keep on denying the threat until it is too late. It is not credible. This doesn`t mean I`ll skip forthcoming books. Still I haven`t read A place of execution, but I will. Anyway, Killing the shadows will be placed in the buttonshelf

This was the first book I had read by Val and found it hard to put down, I have read such rubbish lately i.e The Wishing Game By Patrick Redmond, so this was a refreshing change with what seems like real people. Well done. I shall be looking out for other Val Mcdermid books

Intelligently written
From the Introduction all the way to October 1998 the chill in my spine never went away and my every sense of logic was mystified at the ending. Truly one of the best crime novels I have read in my life.

Dull and expecting
This was the 2nd book I purchased by Val, and along with the first I was disappointed. I enjoy suspense novels and crime novels, and this book I found to drag on and on and on...talk much about nothing..and as the first predictable. Unfortunately I was unhappy!! Crime novels are books you can't put down, and I put this book down several times and painstakingly tried to finish them....

I was totally absorbed by this story
I found that "A Place of Execution" affected me; I felt moved by the denouement but also, strangely, Val McDermid`s strong characterization has you caring even for the less likeable characters. It`s a well-worn cliche to say "I couldn`t put it down" but let`s just say I found it a real wrench to leave off reading because the book is so well-written and crafted. I am now a real fan, Val!! I was born and raised in South Manchester; wish I was still there as I might bump into you!!

I find it hard to put this book down
I think this book is different from The Mermaids Singing. Also it's different from the tv series. I think she should should write an update of this and put it on the tv. I heard that there's a new programme being put up on show leading from Wire in the Blood. Can you tell me if this is true and based on one of your books?

A real let down
I guess I am new to Val Mc Dermid but I've read all the rave reviews so I was disappointed with Star Struck. The story line is so promising but it loses steam somewhere along the way. Val "cheats" i.e. she does not share all the information with the reader which is kind of unfair, right?

Work of a genius!!
Been reading Val's books since 1996, as soon as I finished the first book, I could tell that she was gonna be my fave author for a long while. I was suprised to see the dramatisation of The mermaids singing in the ITV series "Wire in the Blood", but watching it last week, they have lost loads of things that happen in the book. Her imagination is so vivid, I understand why they can't put the more gruesome details into the TV programme. Still it's enjoyable and I always thought that it would look good on screen. All I'm waiting for is to see A Place of Execution on the box. (Will be buying the new book as soon as it comes out in paperback!!)

ENTHRALLING
After watching the "wire in the blood" series I found myself needing to delve into Tony and Carol's minds. This book expands so much on the relationship tension portrayed by Robson Green and Hermione Norris. I found myself wanting to skip ahead and discover how it ends. But it can't end... We need more!!! Thanks to the tv series I can't stop reading Val's books (not just the tony and carol series)

In crime fiction genre, this must surely be one of the best of all time. I recommend it to everyone who seems interested in this genre. I'm so glad that I stumbled across Val McDermid! Fantastic book, once started couldn't leave until I had read the end! Characters were wonderfully explained and the plot had enough turns to keep you hooked. Very refreshing to read a book then read the second and still be hooked, usually is the case that the second never quite matches up...not in this case....! Now have to read the entire works of Ms Gordon! Also V McDermids other books......Will not rest until I do! Will be taking a stack on my Holidays.

Never has a book had such an effect on me!
For the last twenty or thirty pages, I was covered in goose pimples, shaking and sweating, and jumping at the least little noise. This carried on for about half an hour afterwards. 5 stars is definatly not enough
A thrilling and amazing book, i thoroughly enjoyed it !!. This is the first book i have read by val, but definatly not the last, its so realistic and captures what we fear most ! i have always had an intrest in serial killers and criminal psychology and when Val puts it all in one book you couldnt ask for any more. All i ask is that she never ever stops writing! so go on buy it, loan it ..whatever just read it ! i promise you you will thank her afterwards!. It's a rollercoster ride from begining to end, you will not want to put it down at all (trust me). Its detail into the books characters is exeptional and plot wonderfull. feel how they feel ! just remember to take a few weeks of work because you will not want to eat or sleep, but only read it as it twist's and turns you all the way through. It's a book for all. And may i just thank Val once more for giving me something to look forwad to each night when i return home. p.s I look forward to her next book!.

Unstoppable Reading
I have read all of Val's books, my favourite being the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series. The Last Temptation did not disappoint, I couldn't stop thinking of certain chapters, re-living certain scenes in my head for days after. Talking about it to people constantly and then the sadness of it ending with so many questions, so many thoughts of what Carol could have said to Tadeusz to hurt him more than he hurt her! Absolutely fantastic I can't wait for the next Val Mcdermid.

Totally absorbing and fascinating
I have always been intrigued in the Moors Murders, so of course I had to read this. Dark and brooding in nature as you would expect from this backdrop and setting. The characters were very strong particularly the old matriarch, where I knew there was a story. Would have liked to know more about them in the finish but realise this was not relevant to the plot. The story was very clever from start to finish, did not want it to end, could not read another book for sometime afterward. This is my favourite of yours Val, a big challenge for you to come up with its equal, I especially liked the setting and the period. Could we have something else along these lines? I also loved Killing the Shadows with Fiona Cameron and the detective. Well done.

Val has done it again!
Wow - What a fantastic read! As usual when reading one of Val's books no one can attract my attention, or get a word out of me that contains more than one syllable, (much to the annoyance of my nearest and dearest!),until I finally turn the last page. Needless to say this is one of those rare books that make you sorry it has to come to an end. I love the way the central characters have developed and grown over the three books and look forward to the next installment, (come on Val you know they have to do it!). Having two plots running side by side was engaging and a great bonus for the reader - like buy one get one free! If you read nothing else this year read this. It's dynamite.

Much awaited - does not disapoint
The much awaited (by me) The Last Temptation was another great read. Although Im not overly keen on the Brannigans the Tony Hall / Carol Jordon characters are extremely well constructed and Im sure that Im not alone in trusting that they will eventually get it together. In fact the last lines of the book almost suggest this but with VAL we can never be certain how she will develop the characters.
My only critiscisms (minor) are:
I dont think that Carol would have gone straight to Tonys room after her near miss with Tadzio. She would have presumed that there was still a tail and gone to her own room, turning lights etc. on in there. They would never kiss where they could be observed from the outside. Lastly it was very convenient that Tony spoke fluent German. Sorry!
Overall the book did not disappoint. It was good to have the atrocities of both the Stasi and the Nazi regimes brought into focus as a background to the action. I found the psychology of Will Mann very convincing, not that Im an expert in that field. The sad thing is that VAL is probably exactly right that the bureaucracy of the various Police Forces throughout Europe would react in the way she describes (No Im not a Eurosceptic!).
Worst thing: Publication of this book means a long wait for the next.

The Mermaids Singing
     |
Strong story, strong characters and what an ending!!
I discovered Val McDermid purely by accident, having been sent this book as part of a book club set.
Being short of reading material I decided to give it a go and suddenly became emeshed in one of the most mesmorising books I have ever read. As a fan of Minnette Walters, Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs I am a big fan of 'intelligent' fiction, where you use your brain as you read. The Mermaids Singing and indeed all of Val's books I have read, certainly come into the brain using mould.
The book tantalises you right from the start, using excerpts from the killer's own log and introducing to the mind of a violent genius. The main characters from the policing side are extremely believeable, strong in their roles and yet with subtle human weaknesses beneath their tough working exteriors.
Carol Jordan is a hard working female police officer, and her gender is never used by the author in a 'point scoring' exercise, merely as part of the whole character and the complexities therein, reminding me a little of Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect.
Tony Hill is the psychologist, his knowledge and experience without question and yet suffering from real a human weakness - self doubt.
Together in work they are wonderful to read about, outside work they both carefully dance around the edges of mutual attraction, each aware of their own individual doubts.
The killer's character is a gem and I will not spoil it for those of you yet to discover this brilliant book.
The storyline grips you from start to finish and leaves you literally praying for more. Some of the murder sequences are very graphic and yet I felt they were necessarily so and the graphic nature did not detract from the story.
This book has no 'axes to grind' and is just a scintilating read.

I picked up this book because I had enjoyed A Place of Execution. I normally have trouble tolerating vivid violent scenes but I really think the graphic descriptions were a must to the continuity of the story. In fact, I saw each book written by the victims not only as an important part of that writer's character, but each book was a character in itself. The character development was superb! Thanks Val!
