Katie Dickinson Manchester Subject: Val McDermid Oxfam gender and sexuality Q&A Canal Street Manchester Dear Ms McDermid,
My name is Katie; I am a third-year English Literature student at Manchester University and a book volunteer at the Oxfam shop near the university. Oxfam Manchester wants to hold a Q & A event on issues of gender and sexuality with a panel of writers as part of Oxfams National Bookfest fortnight and we would love you to take part.
Our plan is to find a venue on Canal Street , and have a host from Manchester University to pose questions to the panellists and also to take questions from the audience. We would aim to sell tickets for this event at £5, meaning that it would be the most profitable event we are hoping to organise. The aim is to raise enough money to buy a classroom or a library in the developing world.
Currently we are in the very early stages of planning, but we are also trying to contact Jeanette Winterson and Jackie Kay. Idea

Niamh Moynagh Cavan, Ireland I discovered your books about 6 months ago in my local library, I can honestly say I am sad when I finish one of your books, I just want them to go on forever. You are a fabulous writer and I love your books. I have read about 8, and am on the hunt for all the rest.

barbara vienna/austria googling (has that become a word by now? it must, mustn`t it, it is used as a verb even in german) you. i was pleasantly surprised to discover your female. i suppose i never thought about it, just stupidly assumed you were a male author. i put you up close to reginald hill as a favourite author, and then it turns out you are a woman. this comment is in no way meant to be disrespectful, only i find, when i pick up books for "recreational" purposes (which are, yes, mostly crime/mystery/thriller derivatives, i tend to discover that i prefer stories written by males. but you share a place on my best ever list now with fred vargas, a french writress, of whom you`ve probably heard. anyway, i am sorry about the drivel (but the internet seems to enliven the abject rather than the enlightened). i will go on enjoying your books (it`s like tapping into a well, discovering an author you like who wrote numerous books and who`ll hopefully write more and more t

Evelyn Mottram Aberdeenshire Hi val, I was the social worker who stopped Donald McMillan from getting to an open prison whereby he could be free to kill again. Donald McMmillan was a squirmy little c--t in prison. He was a model prisoner but did not ever take me in, however,he did take a lot of prison officers in to his quaint ways and polite manner. I did not during my time in prison ever believe him and I thank goodness mother nature decided that he should pay for his horrific crime by giving him a heart attack. This was soon after he knew he would not be released from prison as soon as he thought he would have liked. He genuinely belived he would not have been a threat to other children or women, but I knew him different. you? have you delved into There are other offenders in your bok who, in my opinion should never be free but that is another story. what I am e-mailing you for is that my grand-daughters friend is showing all the signs of being a serial killer? Would you like to talk this over with me?

Patrizia Galli Soest, Holland Val, you are a GREAT writer. I read "A place of execution" and I was amazed at the atmoshpere you had recreated... After reading "The distant echo" I have become a real fan of you. It's not only the plot, it's how you write, it gives me a deep intellectual pleasure. Can't wait to read all the books you have written.
|
Martin R BangkokThailand I am a newcomer to Val's books having just found Place of Execution in a Bangkok bookshop - fabulous. I'm now looking for all the others!
|
Joy Sheffield Dear Val - I've just finished Fever of the Bone and wanted to thank you for always including lesbian characters in a variety of roles. It's so fantastic to see lives that I recognise well from my own life reflected in literature - though obviously I hope none of us is ever going to be involved in a murder investigation! I imagine you get some flack for it so think it's important you hear the gratitude too. Thank you.

Dean James Houston, TX Congratulations on the Diamond Dagger, Val! Well done.

Cheryl Peterson Seattle, WA, USA One of my books groups is hoping to see your books published in unabridged audio format here in the US. Any chance of that?
|
Ian McGregor Australia Ihave just finished reading "A Darker Domain" and "A Distant Echo" I enjoyed both. The plots were well thought out and credible, and the characterisatios excellent. For someone who studied English at Oxford, the grammar was often quite slipshod.

barbara vienna/austria well, now i did not do a good job of that. i had to split my entry, it seems, and the latter part preceeds the former now. oh well.
|
barbara vienna/austria dear val, much to my chagrin, i only did discover your books, and you - by proxy - a few months ago. it`s good though, that you didn`t feature earlier in my career as book-devouring mystery fiend, so i get to read all your stories now. you probably get to hear that a lot, but i really like your books. they are really rather smart, and this is what i`m after in my self-proclaimed pursuits of escapism via mysteries and crime stories. i started randomly (courtesy to the public library in vienna, well stocked in foreign language literature, fleamarkets - the anglican church vienna runs a second hand book shop) with a bit of this and that, and got hooked on dr. hill for now. i recently started watching the tv series based on wire in the blood, bloody good stuff, i think (this would be courtesy to the internet, then, with its blatant disregard for copyright, i guess). it was only tonight, after finishing reading the torment of others, that i got around googling (has that be

Meredith Anderson U.S.A. Hello Val, I am cracking up as I read the beginning of "Booked For Murder", because I see you tricked me! I thought Sandra Bloom had been sent to murder Lindsay, but I see she was sent to hire her. You did that so well! You didn't lie, you just only gave me pieces of the puzzle that I was likely to interpret that way. LOL! Very clever. I love your books. They are so well written, with such good plots, and even the minor characters are made real and believable. I first was introduced to your work by watching "A Place of Execution" on public TV. Ever since then you have made my trips to the library very easy . I simply go where your books are and get some more of them! Thank you for all the hours of entertainment you have given and will give me. Well, back to my book! -Meredith Anderson , Boston, MA

Bev Todmorden, West Yorkshire I absolutely love the 'authormatic' best seller generator. It had me laughing out loud when I read my own. It's surprising what a bit of fishing line and a little toe can get up to! Val, you are funny and oh-so-gorgeous!

Sonja Baur Chicago, USA I've recently tried to obtain some of your books in German (via Amazon.de) but I don't know the German titles vs the English. Is there a list of titles in English with their translations into German? To get a new reader hooked on you I wanted him to read The Last Temptation but didn't know what it was in German so ordered three and have no idea what I've sent him!!! I'm so looking forward to reading Fever...in English

Calum Macleod Inverness Congratulations on the Diamond Award, Val!
The words "time", "about" and "flippin'" spring to mind. Couldn't have happened to a better and more generous ambassador for the genre.

Pauline Hill Scottish Borders Hi Val,I wonder if you remember me,I used to keep you tidy when you lived in Buxton, and before you became a celebrated novelist!!.I have watched your career blossom over the years and am delighted at your well deserved success. Our very best wihes to you in 2010, kind regards , Pauline and Tony hill.

Cyndy USA Just finished your book "Beneath the Bleeding". Actually I skimmed the last half. It was boring. You used to write really well. I'm sick to death of the liberal slant and you can stop insulting George Bush any time now. In fact, why not mind your own business. You people have your own problems. And for your information, not everyone hates him. I guess I won't be reading any more of your books.

Sally Belfast/Worcester Why Worcester? Is the body location in Worcester a real place? My sister and I have two possible places for it. Would you consider doing something at Worcester festival in August as you have put us on the map as it were?
