Val McDermid has picked Chris Hammer’s Scrublands as one of her debut books of the year and Chris will be appearing on her prestigious NEW BLOOD panel at the 2019 Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate.
Chris Hammer has been a journalist in Australia for over 25 years. He has been an international correspondent for SBS TV’s flagship current affairs program Dateline, the chief political correspondent for The Bulletin and a senior political journalist for The Age. His 2010 non-fiction book, The River, was born from his exploration of Australia’s largest river system, the Murray-Darling (more than a million square kilometres), during the summer of 2008-09 at the height of the worst drought in Australia’s recorded history. It went on to win the ACT Book of the Year Award & was shortlisted for the Walkley Book Award & the Manning Clark House National Cultural Award.
